20 Dishes Made Out Of Green Gram (Moong Dal)

1. Moong Dal Dumplings

Grind and soaked moong dal is added for a coarse texture. Then add ginger, garlic, onions, green chilies, salt, and spices. Mix them together and make small dumplings and fry them. Make a sauce or curry and add the fried dumplings.

2. Green Gram Vegetable

Soak green grams and keep them in a cloth so that they grow into sprouts. Now cook them with tomato and coconut puree. And a delicious dish is ready.

3. Moong Dal Ka Halwa

This dish is again made of soaked dal.  Grind the soaked dal, not to finely and in a pan, heat milk and sugar. In another pan cook the dal in ghee, add the milk mixture to this. Stir it till it reaches the adequate consistency. Serve hot.

4. Moong Dal Ka Dhokla

Grind soaked and drained moong dal till its fine. Put salt, crushed ginger and garlic along with chopped chilies. Take the batter and steam it in a Dhokla vessel.

5. Moong Dal Dosa

Grind together, soaked moong dal and rice. Prepare dosa with this batter. You can also add coriander for taste. Serve hot with chutney.

6. Moong Dal Ki Barfi

Soak and grind the dal (a little course). Fry with ghee or butter in a heavy bottomed vessel on low heat till it is a good golden brown. Remove this to a plate. In this pan again heat dried milk (khoya), add cardamom powder and the fried dal and keep it aside to cool. Prepare a sugar syrup and mix the dal mixture. Set the Barfi on a plate.

7. Moong Dal and Soybean Vada

Mix moong dal and soya beans and soak them overnight. Prepare a batter of a thick consistency. Add finely chopped onions and green chilies along with salt.  Scoop this in any shape and fry in hot oil. Serve hot with any dip or sauce.

8. Moong Dal Hot Dog

Cook the soaked dal in a pressure cooker till it becomes soft. In a pan, sauté chopped onions and garlic along with chopped carrots. Mash the cooked dal and add the sautéed veggies.  Make hot dog shaped patties from the mixture, roll in bread crumbs and shallow fry. Put in hot dog buns and serve.

9. Sprouts Chaat with Moong Dal

Soak and let the dal grow sprouts. You can throw together other sprouts for a healthy snack along with cucumber, carrots and any other raw veggies of your choice. Add some lemon juice, salt and pepper for taste.

10. Moong Dal Kebabs

Grind soaked and boiled green gram into a paste. Mix chopped – onions, green chilies, coriander, tomatoes, salt, pepper, lemon juice and peanuts (if required). Bind with gram flour. Roll into any shape you want and fry. Serve with any dip or chutney.

11. Moong Dal with Spinach

Cook soaked moong dal with tomatoes and green chilies. In a pan heat oil and sauté mustard, urad dal, cumin, chilies, and garlic. Mix the cooked dal and boil. Add cooked and pureed spinach to the cooked lentils. Garnish and serve hot.

12. Haleem

Haleem is a non-veg dish, lamb cooked with lentils. (Add some other lentil if you want) Soak green gram and broken-wheat. In a heavy bottomed vessel splutter the spices, add ginger garlic paste and cook the lamb in it. Add the drained lentils after the lamb is half cooked and cook till everything blends in together.

13. Chutney of Moong Dal

Green gram is used as a side dish in this recipe. Roast the green grams along with any other lentils of your choice and then grind with tamarind. Add salt for taste. In a pan sauté mustard, onions and curry leaves. Mix with the ground mixture.

14. Green Gram Adai

Soak and drain moong dal and then grind to a coarse texture. Put wheat flour, asafetida, other spices, and salt. Mix and prepare the dough. Take balls and flatten then cook on a pan, till it is brown on both sides.

15. Green Gram Soup

Cook soaked moong dal with potatoes and tomatoes. Grind the veggies and lentils into a smooth paste. Sauté garlic and onions add the lentil paste and add water according to the consistency.

16. Green Gram Idlis with Vegetables

Grind together soaked rice and green gram and prepare a batter. Sauté onions, green chilies, tomatoes, chopped carrots, spinach and any other veggies that you want to add to the batter. Take the required scoop and steam in an idli maker.

In a pan sauté cinnamon and green cardamom and cook the soaked and drained green gram. Remove from heat and grind the sautéed dal. In the same pan put ghee, add the paste, coconut milk, cardamom powder and sugar. Simmer it for some time and turn off the heat and serve.

18. Mangauchi

Mangauchi is a dish of green gram dumplings in a yogurt based curry. Grind the soaked dal and divide it into two parts. Make dumplings from one and use the other for gravy. Use the remaining green dal mixture, add spices and salt for taste. Then add yogurt and make a paste. In a pan splutter the cumin seeds and pour the yogurt mixture. Add the dumplings to this.

19. Green Banana Cooked With Green Gram

Cook soaked and drained green gram. Remove the peels of green bananas and cook until they are tender. Splutter cumin and dry chilies, add coconut and tamarind and grind together. In a pan mix all the three together and cook till everything is combined.

20. Murgh Kurkuri

(Stir fried chicken in a green gram batter) Marinate the chicken pieces in a mixture of vinegar, garlic, salt, and pepper. Grind the soaked dal with coriander and green chilies. Dip the marinated chicken in the dal batter and shallow fry.
