India is the land of spices with all the different varieties and sizes of fresh and dried herbs and spices available in the markets and the local shops. These aromatic spices are used for cooking and the outcome of using these spices are great food and great colour. However besides the taste, the spices also prove to be useful for our body without us knowing about it. Here is a list showing the different spices which are used by the Indian households in their everyday cooking and their benefits for our health.

1. Cumin/Jeera

Cumin or ‘Jeera’ is a savoury spice which is dried and cultivated. It is known to help in digestion of food, treat insomnia, good to have it when infected with common cold and also treats skin disorders.


2. Turmeric/Haldi

The spice of every Indian household, Turmeric is the quintessential Indian spice that is used for every Indian food. The golden powder is actually a root vegetable that looks similar to ginger. Turmeric is known to improve condition which may lower chances of any heart-related diseases. It also helps in digestion of food and has anti-bacterial and antioxidant properties.


3. Cinnamon/Dal-Chini

This is one of the few spices which is popular throughout the world. 7. Fenugreek/Methi

8. Nutmeg/Jayaphal

9. Black Pepper/Gul-Mohor

The sharp pungent black seeds are not only good in your food but it’s also good for your body. The Black Pepper boosts our metabolism which helps our body to digest food properly. 10. Asafoetida/Hing

11. Mace/Gada

20. Mustard Seeds/Sarso
